FAQ
Q: What is Senjutsu?
A: Senjutsu is an umbrella term for Battle Arts. Kaicho Lee also uses the word Senjutsu to denote the term Sage Arts or the Immortal Science and Initiative of going before or first to lead (Sen No Sen).
Q: Is Senjutsu suitable for self defence?
A: Yes, as Senjutsu is designed with self defence as a priority. We reinforce the necessity for using the initiative and a preemptive mindset to avoid unwanted situations. When all other options have been exhausted we train to physically defend ourselves in realistic simulation scenarios.
Q: Do I have to wear the Japanese uniform and equipment?
A: Yes, Senjutsu is a martial (military) art and as such we place significant value on the discipline of uniforms and the bonding it brings to the team. We wear the traditional black DoGi. It is also important to wear the protective equipment to fulfil our safe training policy. Students are advised to wear plain black until the official DoGi is obtained.
Q: What happens at the first class?
A: All students will be given the rules and conditions for training and asked to sign in. You will then be given a safety briefing and taught the basic protocols and etiquette, with stances, footwork and movements. A introduction into basic combat techniques can then commence. Senjutsu is a Budō style so the emphasis is on self development by way of the martial arts and not just fighting. All classes start and finish with concentration and meditation exercises.
Q: Is it expensive to train in Senjutsu?
A: There is a cost but in comparison to other sports and activities it is relatively low. In tennis you can spent £200 just on a racket and golf even more. The cost vs benefit in studying Senjutsu is heavily favoured in the benefits such as; fitness, confidence, resilience, prescience, self defence and much more.
Q: Can I do my belt grading at Senjutsu?
A: Yes, definitely we encourage all students to grade. There are 9 student Kyu grades before black belt (shodan). The 9 stages take you through beginner, intermediate and advanced in incremental steps.
Q: Is Senjutsu a striking or grappling art?
A: We study holistically in all ranges but we put the emphasis on self defence and whatever it takes to win or survive.
Q: I already study in the martial arts can I wear my own uniform and equipment?
A: No, we have our own official uniform and to guarantee safety and the fulfilment of our safe training policy we need to quality control what equipment students are using. Therefore all uniforms and equipment must be obtained directly from the school. Please ask the instructor if you are unsure.
Q: How would you best describe your training?
A: We often call it unarmed Kendo or Kenjutsu with contemporary practical combat techniques.
